AWA AFLA

AWA HORTI

Strengthening Food Security in Africa through Harmonizing Agriculture Value Chains

In our global effort to enhance food security, AWA AFLA places Africa at the core of an innovative strategy, combining political and technological commitments. The “Africa Work for Africa” (AWA) AFLA project delivers immediate, impactful solutions to combat aflatoxin contamination in maize, grains, rice, and nuts value chains. This initiative not only addresses local food security but also sets a significant precedent in the global fight against food challenges exacerbated by climate change, contributing to SDG1 and SDG2.

Projects for Immediate Implementation and Impact

  • Mobile Dryers for Prevention: We will acquire and distribute mobile dryers for immediate post-harvest maize treatment to prevent mold and aflatoxin formation.
  • Aflabox Monitoring and Analysis: Advanced analytical tools will be deployed for rapid, cost-effective contamination monitoring directly in the fields, enabling informed crop management decisions.
  • Advanced Decontamination Plants: Construction of plants capable of processing large quantities of contaminated maize, ensuring product safety for human and animal consumption. These solar-powered, sustainable facilities will be crucial in tackling compromised harvests.

Projects for Immediate Implementation and Impact

Integrated Strategies and Tangible Results

By adopting mobile dryers, Aflabox tools, and advanced decontamination plants, AWA AFLA aims to revolutionize food security across Africa. These scalable solutions not only mitigate aflatoxin risks but also provide a replicable model. The AWA AFLA approach, characterized by rapid scalability and targeted investments, has the potential to deliver measurable results quickly, enhancing international visibility.

Economic and Social Impacts

Implementing these technologies promises significant economic benefits by reducing food loss, improving crop quality, and enhancing public health. This investment fosters agricultural sustainability, improves farmers’ livelihoods, and contributes to the overall well-being of communities.

Public-Private Partnership and Financial Sustainability

The success of the AWA program hinges on economic sustainability, effective debt management, and mobilization of investment funds. Collaboration with Italian and European authorities, blended finance models, and grants will ensure the project’s long-term viability and impact.
AWA AFLA leverages advanced technologies and strategic partnerships to drive sustainable development, reduce carbon emissions, and improve access to essential services across Africa. By focusing on local needs and strengths, AWA FARO aims to create a brighter, more sustainable future for Africa, adaptable to the specific needs of each country. Through these initiatives, Italy positions itself as a leader in promoting innovative approaches to international cooperation, aligning with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.

AWA HORTI

At the heart of this project is the introduction of cutting-edge agricultural technologies and processing facilities, including Hot Water Treatment (HWT), avocado oil production, vegetable oil refining, and industrial quick freezing (IQF), all powered by solar energy solutions.
This comprehensive and integrated approach is set to revolutionize Africa’s agro-industrial landscape, promoting sustainability, economic growth, job creation, and international trade.

Advancing Agricultural Technology and Processing

The AWA HORTI strategy focuses on implementing innovative technologies and establishing state-of-the-art processing facilities to maximize the value of African agricultural products. The integration of HWT, oil production, refining, and IQF projects addresses critical challenges in food preservation, quality assurance, and market accessibility. This ensures that high-value agricultural products like mangoes, avocados, pineapples, passion fruit, and fresh vegetables meet international standards while providing quality produce for domestic and regional markets.

Integrated Development Strategy

High-Definition Scanning

Utilizing advanced scanners for accurate assessment of fresh produce, ensuring top quality for high-value export markets.

Hot Water Treatment (HWT)

Eradicating fruit fly pests in mangoes, significantly enhancing export quality.

Avocado Oil Production

Transforming non-market-grade avocados into high-demand healthy oils for the global market.
